I found this in my in-law's attic. I knew it was old, and that it was a Singer, and I had the serial number... no model number.

In an effort to get the model information I contacted singer with the serial number, and after a few days they responded -

"...Our records show that serial #1283[xxxx] belongs to Singer Model 39-2
manufactured on June 6, 1895 in Clydebank, Scotland..."

They don't really know what to do with it... It seems to be in pretty good shape, missing the leather belt, all else seems to be more or less intact.

    Very interesting machine, I think...

      Hi Gazza,
the 1895 date is right, but the machine is a model 27 or VS-2. I'm not sure why Singer records show it as a 39. Treadle belts aren't hard to come by, check online and also ask at any Singer dealer - compare prices before you buy :)

sorry that possibly is a 39 - can you add a pic of the end where the needle is?

I don't think it could be a 27 or VS2; one of the things that really threw me when trying to ID this was the lack of a front access door on the head...
I changed one of the pics to reflect a view of the needle.

Yes the extra photo confirms it - the curved path of the takeup lever. They are so similar to the 27 at first glance. What else is different about them? Is the shuttle and needle the same as a 27? Size? The balance wheel looks hefty :)

Well, you know as much as I do about this machine at this point. I have no idea really, and I won't be able to travel to where the machine is (in-laws) for another 2 weeks or so.
This machine definitely looks "related" to the VS-series, 27, 28, 127 & 128 machines. I think they (in-laws) are looking to get rid of it, & I wanted them to at least know what they had before they sold it. After not finding another machine like it after a couple of days of scouring the internet, I was desperate to find out the model, and I'm glad I did. I hate open-ended mysteries. :)

no, information about them is pretty scarce.

Nice decals are in great condition, what did they end up doing with it?

Yes that is a singer 39k2. They didn't sell as well as the vs3/28 and are quite rare.
