The Savage Revolving Fire-Arms Company out of Middletown, CT made about 20,000 of these revolvers.

This particular Navy Model was made from about 1861 to the mid 1860s. Of those produced about 12,000 were under government contract.

This particular example is in dug, relic condition and is missing the distinctive figure eight trigger and the trigger guard. The Savage markings are still visible on the frame above the cylinder.

Thanks jimbo-- unfortunately, I don't know where it was found.

Sadly, you will find many Civil War battlefield dug/ pick up items with bogus attributions. It can really increase desirability and profits, so the market is dangerous for new collectors. Take a look at ebay and you will find buyers paying many times what an object is worth due to a Gettysburg attribution (many of which cannot be verified and many obviously bogus).

A common adage among Civil War collectors is "buy the relic not the story"!

      Thanks again for looking.

Well put about buying, Scott. If this is in good enough condition to read lettering, why not fix it up with some parts to make it a realistic wall-hanger. Of course no collector would be fooled but it would look better on the wall. Dixie Gun Works may have some parts. I'm by no means talking about "faking" but making it more interesting to the uneducated in antique gun developement.
