This necklace was given to me by my husband. It belonged to his grandmothers great, great grandmother. The necklace may have been a brooch at one time. At some point the pendant had something else in it, but no one seems to know what it was. In the 1930's the Liberty coin was put in the middle. The coin had significants to the lady who wore it. What the story is behind the coin has since been lost. We just know it meant a lot to her and she placed it in the middle. We believe the chain to be around the same time period as well. The coin is held in place by 3 prongs, which in my opinion seems to be rough and sharp and not very professionally done. We have not been able to find any types of markings to tell us if it is actually silver or not. Those markings may have once been on whatever the center piece that had originally been in the middle. I love this necklace, because it was obviously worn a lot and it was very cherished by the women who owned it. It was given to me, because my husband knew I would cherish it and take care of it. I would just like to know more information on it. Btw, the same woman (the great, great grandmother) who owned this pendant, I also have her castiron pans as well. I love this kinda stuff!

Yea, I have heard of Google, however, I am wondering about the style of the pendant and about what year it would have been made. I'm not wanting to know if it is worth anything or not. I am just more curious as to the time period it may have been made in. My husband thought that since his family is from Ireland, she may have brought it over with her. I haven't been able to find anything yet though.
      Thank you for your comments.

I think it's a lovely little piece.. and the history behind it is priceless. I wonder if it might have held a portrait at some point? It's too bad that someone in the family has no memory of why that year was significant to her. Perhaps a birth year or death year remembrance.. or maybe even the year of her immigration? I can see why you would want to know more about it. I would too! :-)

Chinablue, I agree that it is sad that the family has no idea as to why it was important. I was wondering if maybe it was the first money she had earned or something like that. The coin was has the date of 1934 on it, so that would have been during the great depression. So, I can only imagine her story. lol And I think that maybe it may have been a brooch first then became a pendant. All the photos I have seen of brooched with this kinda roundness and heaviness were brooches with photos or cameos in them. Hopefully, I will find out more about it.

Interesting to think it may have been her first dollar. Almost makes you wonder if she had to sell whatever was in it at some point. I can see how it may have been a brooch. Seems a lot of them were converted into pendants, and vice versa. And as for the cast iron pans, I use my grandmother's skillets and dutch ovens frequently. Nothing in the world cooks like those things! *S*

I love this...So much history in such a piece as this. WayaAdalii, some people can't see the forest for the money trees. You know? It's priceless to you and that's all that matters.

The style of the pendant looks 1940's, and that fits in with the 1934 date. That enlarged Florentine finish is usually seen on costume jewelry, so I don't believe it is silver. That coin was probably what it originally held

This is such a beautiful piece. The history behind it is precious and fills me with awe. I have been attracted to coins because they are interesting avenues for learning history and "surprising" us. At one time they were indeed works of art and not just something to trade for goods. This is lovely. I know you are thrilled to own it.

Chinablue, We still use the pans as well. The pans have seen a lot of days, the outside of the pans have a nice thick charred patina on it. It has seen many of fires. lol.
      Jimborasco, indeed! :-)
Stillwater, You could very well be right. I will have it looked at.. hopefully soon. One of the reasons I would like to know more about it.. just incase they are mixed up with the information on it.
Purpledog, Thank you. :-) You are right on about the coins being a work of art. My ex collects coins and one of the reasons he said he loved collecting.. was the time that was put in designing the images that would be on the coins.
