One of the trunks we got this weekend at an auction. Not really finding much about this style online. Lable stating "Taylor Made" C.A. Trunk Works 1859 Chicago - New York. Has a pull out shelf under the lid. Also the letters "P M" on the sides of the trunk. Not sure if its personalized or if thats a style. Letters on the side about the size of a ladies hand. Any idea what it's worth, age or used for would be extremely helpful!

I love the Taylor trunks -- still trying to find one. Yours looks to be from around the early 1900's with what appears to be vulcanized paper covering. A standard use trunk like many of its day. Taylor made a better quality trunk than a lot of other manufacturers. This type and style does not hold a big value -- you should be able to find similar trunks in your areas classified to get a handle on value. Nice to see it still has the tray with it. thanks for the post -- hope this helps a little.

Thank you very much! We definitely want to get it looked at just need to find someone who might know about trunks. We saw 2 on ebay that were going for $450+ so with you saying not much value kinda a bummer! Thanks again!

They can ask a lot on ebay and not get the return. Value is a little subjective. I believe your trunk is a nice example -- just to clarify I said it did not have "big" value, which some specialized trunks have. The problem for some on this type of trunk is the covering -- which makes it hard to refinish. It does have value, probably not in the $400 range but again my market area can be quite different than yours. Perhaps on ebay a collector looking for a Taylor trunk might bite at that range -- hard for me to say, but that certainly would be the "upper end". I think it is a nice quality trunk and I would be happy to have it in my collection.
