This New Haven wall clock was handed down from my grandfather to my dad and now I have it hanging in my den. I don't have alot of information about this clock. I check New Haven clocks on google and was told the paper label inside date this clock to the 1880's.

Very nice clock. I noticed in pic #2 the "S" in square is backwords!!! Hmmmm....
Whats up with that I wonder.......

Thanks, I often wondered why the S was backwards. either a mis-print from painting from reverse side or the person didn't know how to write a S. Hmmm

I don't know where or how the misnomer began, but that clock was not intended to be a wall hanging clock. The back is only held on with very short square nails, and is not glued to the rest of the case. These clocks were intended to be supported on a shelf or table. Hanging them on the wall by just the back is taking a very large chance that they will someday come crashing down. There is a great deal of tension placed on the back, particularly when winding, as the weights are supported by a line that runs up from the movement, over pulleys the the top. When winding, the full weight is placed on the top, tending to pull it downward and away from the back. I strongly recommend you either get or make a shelf to support it, or move the clock to a table, against a wall. The clock should be attached to the wall behind the table or shelf on which it stands, not for vertical support, but to keep it from falling forward on its face. They are very top heavy when fully wound.

Precisionrepair, Thanks for the information. I went and looked at my clock and I found that mind has a hanging bracket that is cut into the main frame of the clock. It looks to be factory made and installed, not a later add on bracket. By German lock has the same hanging bracket, but it also has adjustment screws on the side to keep it level and from moving side to side.

      GREAT clock!

The dating on the clock suprises me. I would have thought that it was from about 20- 40 years earlier.

I wouldn't think the Victorian/ Eastlake market would have been strong for this style clock!

I agree. This is a very nice column clock. I see the notation in the glass panel paint, but I can't see everything on the label behind the pendulum. How do you know this is a "New Haven" clock? Do you mean that it was made by the New Haven Clock Co.? Is the movement stamped, or does it say so somewhere on the label? Have I completely missed something? Please clue me in...I'm clueless! :)

The tablet in the door depicts public square New Haven, Conn. The label inside is from BIRGE, PECK & Co. 1849 to 1859. The label is super condition and referred to as the "Puffin Betsy" label. Oh, and get it off the wall and set it on a mantle or table !
