It is either an ambrotype or tintype. If the image is on a piece of glass (not just a piece of cover glass) then it is an ambrotype.
The tinting and tone of the image suggest that it MAY be from the UK and not the US.

I believe it is on a piece of glass. My ancestors are English so that would make sense . Thanks again Scott
English ambrotypes were made up until the turn of the century. In the US, post Civil War ambrotypes are rarely encountered.
The thermoplastic case on this one is desirable and collectible in its own right.

I have been told the case is what's best about it. Someone told me it may be ivory? What material do you believe it to be?
Ooops - I guess thermoplastic!
Last question - any idea of the value of this? Not selling - just curious if there is any
It is no doubt thermoplastic. It is made from gum shellac, wood fiber and dye that is heated and mixed together-- then poured into molds for the desired shapes.
These are often called gutta purcha but this material is NOT gutta purcha.

Values of cases are determined by size and design.
The most common designs are geometric like yours.

Thank you for the great info
