I have owned this large Quezal shade-vase for a few years now, and it has always puzzled me to a degree. I have never seen a Quezal shade-vase anything like this, especially when you measure it at 9-1/2" tall by 8" in diameter at the rim! The pontil is not polished, which might be because it was intended as a shade-lamp (torchiere?) in the first place. The QUEZAL signature is above the pontil, and looks authentic. I also have a theory about fakes - that they are rarely "large" because of the expense - so this one passes that test, and is of Quezal quality.

When I bought it (ebay) I was shocked to find lines running through the glass, which I thought were hairlines. For some reason I kept the vase (still very beautiful) and then discovered later the lines are NOT hairlines, but swirls in the design on the INSIDE surface (look like hairlines when held up to the light, but are interior raised-ridges of glass when inspected closely). If Coy W. is reading this I appologize for my ignorance, and I now hold this as one of my favorites. Probably late Quezal production, but still a unique antique! Enjoy!

Pardon but I think this is a newer piece from a contemporary glass studio. I have collected Quezal for years and have never seen a shade vase . And I believe the signature is fake. The early signature is finely engraved and the later signature was gone over with a "silver" pencil much like Durand copied later.
Regardless it is still a nice piece.

Yes, I agree and have suspected this might not be an actual Quezal piece, and I have seen Quezal shade vases but never this size or shape - I owned a "quilted" shade-vase similar to one on ebay right now. But I have never seen a contemporary vase like this either, and that puzzles me too. This is probably a one-off that someone embelished? I do know about the silver highlighting on the later-genuine signatures, and that is the first thing about this vase that made me suspicious. But it is a stunner! I just wish I could figure out who really made it. The glass is also too clear, which also bugged me.
