The Japanese Doll Festival Hina-matsuri?), or Girls' Day, is held on March 3rd.
the Japanese Doll Festival, better known as Girls' Day is celebrated on the third day of the third month, March 3rd. This is the day when families pray for the happiness and prosperity of their daughters and to help ensure that they grow up healthy and beautiful.

Taking place either at home or at the seashore (or both), the family sets up platforms with red cloth (hi-mosen) which is used to display a set of ornamental dolls (hina-ningyo). The dolls on this stair-like display represent the Emperor, Empress, attendants,

The top tier holds two dolls, known as imperial dolls dairi-bina?). These are the Emperor Odairi-sama?) holding a ritual baton and Empres Ohime-sama?) holding a fan. The words dairi means "imperial palace", and hime means "girl" or "princess".

The dolls are usually placed in front of a gold folding screen by?bu and placed beside green Japanese garden trees.

Optional are the two lampstands, called bonboriand the paper or silk lanterns that are known as hibukuro, which are usually decorated with cherry or ume blossom patterns.

Complete sets would include accessories placed between the two figures, known as sanb? kazaricomposing of two vases of artificial peach branch kuchibana

The traditional arrangement had the male on the right, while modern arrangements had him on the left (from the viewer's perspective).

      Second platform
The second tier holds three court ladies san-nin kanjo. Each holds sake equipment. From the viewer's perspective, the standing lady on the right is the long-handled sake-bearer Nagae no ch?shi, the standing lady on the left is the backup sake-bearer Kuwae no ch?shi , and the only lady in the middle is the seated sake bearer Sanp?

Accessories placed between the ladies are takatsuki, stands with round table-tops for seasonal sweets, excluding hishimochi.
The 3 tier often displayed musicains . Hope you find the history interesting it is a wonderful display ! Love it

This is out of the ball park!!! Manikin it was so nice to hear your description. I have a Asian Doll in a Glass case with a black round big hat, red belt sash with pink sash above it and in the left hand the base of what appears to be a cherry branch that is draped over the right shoulder down. It has a small wooden plaque that is signed with black ink. I saw another very similar with the black round hat, red sash and cherry branch over the shoulder . Has anyone ever heard of a cherry blossom rite where the woman wear flat wide round black hats ans red sashes and carry a cherry branch over their shoulder??? I am so curious. This piece is the COUP DE GRACE!!! I would love to happen upon a beautifl piece like this Post, absolutely exquisite, and so much more intriquing with manikin's explanation, she so very smart!!!!
