Before I got a chance to see them, these were described as an octopus drinking set, and hence I had no idea what to expect when they arrived. They are Welz, and on Craig’s wonderful website the pattern is called ‘bubbles and spots’.
Why octopus you might ask? The first time the dealer saw this pattern it was on one of those footed knuckle bowls and the combination of the two (pattern and shape) does make it look a bit like an octopus or at least like octopus suckers.
Perhaps more important here is a stunning Welz, I’m guessing c1925, drinks set - never seen the like of it before. It is quite simply made – no stems or feet and cold cut tops -quite a lot of variety in the glasses .
Sadly there are only 5 tots, ok for a Japanese set, but I guess once there was 1 more (or maybe 3 more to make an octopus set). Not entirely sure what you would drink out of it –sake perhaps or hopefully not ink?

      Gorgeous! Love it!
Idiosyncratic, I know, but I like shot glasses for port. I reckon this would be great to decant an old, crusty bottle of port into. Or then there's schnapps ... Much more conventional!

prune liqueur, and I love the size, it makes it so ominous at dinner parties

Glasses for German Schnapps, Zwetschke (plum brandy) and vodka were always small, even smaller than a jigger of whiskey. But that was before the barbarism of drinking single malt with ice cubes.
