This is a nice engraved matchbox holder from WW1.
It was constructed by a German Prisoner of war-- most likely in France at the time (French coin on one side). It is a piece of shell brass that has been bent with an end piece added on one side.
Purchased or traded on "Sept. 22, 18" by an American soldier named "M. L. Corrigan".
The engraving style is typical of this era.
I have had this one for about 25 years-- one of my first pieces of trench art!
