This little item caught my eye in a charity thrift shop here in southwestern Pennsylvania because Greek Mythology was my favorite reading when I was young. I believe this may be a rendering of Pan and his favored nymphs (the gender of the figure on the left is in question) - it's colors are very vintage looking green, black, rust and ochre, greek key and acanthus? leaves with gold metallic and white striping.
Interior is chalky white. It is 5" across and not quite 2" in height.
I have been searching for MONTHS for any insight but no luck - could it be nothing more than a turn of century carnival prize?
One odd thing about it is that there are faint signs of letters that may have been transferred from being wrapped in an old newspaper(have a 1800's look to them). ANY IDEAS???? thanks!
Before even looking around firstly I am going to guess this is a snuff box
