Why would a young woman artist label her calligraphic dove with the cryptic phrase "Eat Less Wheat" ?

I am not sure which land fight, crop failure, state line or health concern motivated a young woman named Angel to produce this piece of art, but it does add a bit of mystery to the drawing. I do know whatever it was took place in the mid to late 19th century, and the wheat shaft being consumed by an insect might provide a clue to the solution. Maybe it is that little bugger who should eat less.

19th Century original Calligraphic Dove with message "Eat Less Wheat" by Angel Carnegessi. Collection Jim Linderman

before ww1, there was a campaign to eat less wheat in order to provide england, france, belgium w/ more wheat since they were all fighting and couldn't grow their own.

An early form of gluten intolerance? Is it a cuckoo? Perhaps not, but I think that this is a position that was encouraged by patriotic groups during times of war. I remember seeing this slogan on WWI posters. Can we be certain that this is a nineteenth century item?

I'm not sure it's a dove--its tail is shaped wrong. Their tails are shaped like--dove-tail joints! Good luck!
