    Why would a young woman artist label her calligraphic dove with the cryptic phrase "Eat Less Wheat" ?

    I am not sure which land fight, crop failure, state line or health concern motivated a young woman named Angel to produce this piece of art, but it does add a bit of mystery to the drawing. I do know whatever it was took place in the mid to late 19th century, and the wheat shaft being consumed by an insect might provide a clue to the solution. Maybe it is that little bugger who should eat less.

      before ww1, there was a campaign to eat less wheat in order to provide england, france, belgium w/ more wheat since they were all fighting and couldn't grow their own.

      An early form of gluten intolerance? Is it a cuckoo? Perhaps not, but I think that this is a position that was encouraged by patriotic groups during times of war. I remember seeing this slogan on WWI posters. Can we be certain that this is a nineteenth century item?

      I'm not sure it's a dove--its tail is shaped wrong. Their tails are shaped like--dove-tail joints! Good luck!
