I was excited to find this at the flea market this weekend - there is so much going on with this piece, it's hard to know where to start! Let's start from the inside going out - the interior layer is clear glass. You can look straight through from the top through the polished pontil. Over the clear is a layer of cranberry - shining a light down inside confirms this, as well as the applied base, which is the same color. The applied rim and rigaree appear to be reddish brown, but I don't know if that is just an optical illusion (remember your color wheel? Red and green are on opposite ends)
Then there is the white enameled floral motif around the body, accented and outlined with gold ink (another Harrach marker). One of the strangest things is that there appears to be a thin layer of blue glass over the bottom (but nowhere else). I don't know what to make of that. I do think, however, that everything about this piece was done deliberately, and the odd combination of colors works - kind of like the way a reuben sandwich works, despite a list of ingredients that sound like they don't go together.
Thanks, B - I had a field day at the market this weekend - there was a lot of glass and some great deals to be had. :)
Wild combinations of decors...very unique. Congrats
this is such a weird and cool vase. I love it.
