Family history as told to me is that this size 9 thimble belonged to a 3x Great Aunt, is from the mid 1800's and 18kt gold. I was given it to add to a thimble collection I once had but was unfortunately stolen except for this and a couple of others that I had luckily put away for safe keeping.
This is a very light thin thimble weighing approx. 3 gram. No gold kt stamp is visible but the jeweler was able to identify a mark inside at the top that looks like the Simons Brothers mark. The acid test for gold was inconclusive

Its deffinitely gold. Probably worth a chunk of change too, but keep it in the family

Thanks for the comments. Very helpful. I'm in the process of listing household stuff estate purposes so I will have to have it properly tested I guess to prove the gold content mostly for confirming the family history.

Some jeweler's are rough when acid testing, they'll rub it EXTREMELY hard on the touchstone, like they're trying to make it write like a piece of chalk. Keep an eye on him when he does it, tell him to be gentle. You can type in "gold thimble" on eBay and look under the completed listings to see what things sold for, don't go by what people are ASKING, thats a mistake. You want to see what people are ACTUALLY paying for comparable pieces, so you HAVE to search the completed listings. Good luck

It deffinitely has the look of 18k, and if its that old, it probably is.

I already had the acid test done and was told she couldn't say whether it was gold or not but that another test ? (not sure what other)could be done requiring her to send it away. Still debating with myself on that one.

Just take it to another jeweler. Don't let her send it away, I have horror stories about sending things to different places to have stuff done, then getting it back to find it ruined or the value severely decreased... Yeah, just take it to someone else, it shouldn't be hard to figure out, either the acid eats the streak or it doesn't.

Probably too late to comment, but the shield is Simons. It's gold. Nice thimble, probably grt $110 or so for it. It's nothing exceptional. Can submit to Thimble Collectors International and CyberThimble for detailed info.

      Beautiful!

Probably worth more than 110 in scrap

Thanks for the confirmations. and feedback. Still haven't determined if it is 18 karat or not. Have scraped other gold pieces and the returns were not great. So I don't think I will scrap the thimble as most of its value is in its family history.
