I recently aquired this item and am not sure who manufactured it, its date and whether it's a coffee mill, grain mill or what.
anybody come across one like this or maybe knows something about it.
    many thanks

My good friend in the US identified it from his Macmillan guide.
It's an 1860's Spong #4 coffee grinder and is one of the first types they manufactured. The Spong company was formed in 1856.

I have one like it. I bought at an auction in England. I didn't know who the manufacturer was but later found out it was a Spong. The hopper flops out real easy, huh?
