Hi, this is 11" X 16", The frame I believe from studying is from around 1900. There is no glass, so I would think a print would not last 100 years or more not protected. It is not on paper. I would like to know the name of painting or print or the artist who did this. It looks like many years in house with smokers as is dirty, I think. I have been collecting more than 30+ years and one bedroom is full, and now researching! This site Collector"s Weekly is a big help along with members! Thanks Toracat
It is hard to tell from your photos. Pls add some more-- include the back, close ups of any signatures or writing.

Hi new photos, I have not taken apart, but it is not on paper and no signature, toracat
Hi when I bought it, I actually bought it because I thought the frame was worth something, toracat
It is sad print or painting, like the sun is setting on Indian Empire and horse looks tired. toracat
oil on board?
The frame doesn't look original to THIS piece (NOT a comment on the age of the painting) as the feathers extend into the frame edge at the top.
scott
Yes you are right! and horses hoof's are maybe cut? maybe someone cut to make it fit into frame, I believe it is very dirty. I will read internet on how to clean, I bought for frame, but now I am starting to like it some. toracat
It looks like an interesting painting-- can you take a few photos of it out of the frame? It may take a second listing to add the "out of frame photos" but may help to ID. Photos of the board back will be helpful as well.
scott
Maybe I will take apart soon, I do not think it is on board, canvas it seems as I can touch it where there is hole in wood back. Toracat.
The style brings Remington, Russell or Catlin to mind & may be a starting point to dig.
Thanks, maybe scottvez is right! maybe someone cut top and bottom to fit frame and cut off signature? Stranger things have happened! toracat
Hi this is back of stiff canvas, it has been cut as is not straight across? Anyway I like the frame, and sad Indian a little, toracat
The canvas looks odd-- what is it on/ how is it streched to the frame?
Can you post a photo of the entire canvas showing the frame attachment as well?
scott
Hi I just took a close up and nailed it all back. I do not understand canvas's but this is not wood but is stiff solid? Did they have canvas board? or something like that? Toracat
I was looking to see if Litho. was glued onto, but did not look like it. I thought maybe someone did this, then painted varnish, or laquer or shelaque which I am too lazy to look up spelling of these words, haha to protect is? Just a thought toracat
oil was often used on paper which was then glued to board. sometimes this was done w/ canvas too. the painting looks like it was very skillfully done - possibly a sketch for a larger painting. i agree that the format appears to have been changed to fit into the frame. it's still an interesting painting and i'd research it some more - and clean it if you can do it w/out ruining it. rubbing alcohol and many cotton swabs maybe? careful not to ruin it though.
the name of it was probably 'the scout' and it does kind of remind me of c.m. russell.
ho2cultcha thank you I am learning, I have huge oil on canvas board and can not make out artist name, I want to know so bad I am giving away print! I would like you to take a look! It is the European scene by Robert ??? toracat
I was looking at artist and Gilbert Gaul seems similar but did not find this painting. toracat
you're doing VERY well! it looks an awful lot like a gilbert gaul. i'm surprised that you can't tell whether it is a print or a painting. have you looked at it w/ a large magnifying glass? keep us posted.
Hi ho2cultcha Yes Gaul did it I think I found another painting with Indian, face same and same feathers on head! Also saw some orange colored skies. If it is painting, it is very thin paint. Maybe he painted on top of print? I have jewelers scope and It has to be covered with something , it is on thick canvas. My John Cox is a print as there are dots but some parts are solid? I need to learn more, and is a john cox 1942 print valuable? I will put a Japanese print on now I can not figure that one out either! toracat
there are many different kinds of prints - some of them are as valuable as original paintings. there are many factors though. i don't know anything about john cox.
Thanks you have been a great help! now I am motivated again! toracat
