It all metal and about 8 inches across . I think it has something to do with the farming industry , but , have no idea . Not for food processing . Handle goes in the red part . Wheel spins around and has a sharpened edge . Red part has a moisture relief hole on each side . Red part has an area that can be stepped on .
Could it be for measuring?
I, for 1, have no idea, but if you find out, let me know. I'm the type who won't leave a hardware store until I know what everything does or is used for. Somebody went to the trouble of manufacturing it. Are there any markings like pat.#?
eye4, meat grinder plate sounds great. (I) accept that. I'm really tired of hanging out in hardware stores trying to figure out what things do without asking!
I'm almost certain you are right & cast my vote for "meat grinder plate".
What are the other do-dads for? Don't let me confuse the issue. PLEASE!
There are no markings on this item .. a meat grinder would not have any paint on it !
callBob, you are determined to commit my soul to wandering around in old hardware stores! Actually grinder plate fits what it looks like, so what do you think? I don't want my soul to wander for ever in old hardware stores, but might be better than some scenerios I am thinking of.
Thinking about food is the wrong direction due to sanitation rules set out by the government .. the maker would not do it . The red part would accept a tapered stick in it and a screw would hold it in place ..that's a " could " . The red part swings 360% around the green part and the green part swings 360% around like a merry Go Round . The set screw simply holds the red part in place once it is slid into the slot for it . There is a rectangular opening in the red shaft that goes all the way through and shows the same on the opposite side ... which i don't quite get ;-)
The edge on the green part is sharp .. which reminds me of an edge trimmer to cut lawn sod in the landscape business ... OMG ! Did i just solve my own mystery ?
I hope so! I'm tired of losing 10 secs sleep every nite trying to figure it out!

Layout circle ?? I'm thinking .. not . To many problems exist for it to be used as an item to make circles from and it ain't sharp enough to cut any fabric .... I think the holes are there so that anything that might stick to the sides/top/bottom of it would be discouraged to do so by the holes not having an area to allow this to happen ,,, Like maybe sod dirt ?
I have worked with film equipment so sorta resembles a film rewinder but Im sure thats probably not what it is, the colors resemble something more farm oriented

Could it be to remove tires from the rims?
It's NOT a lawn sprinkler as there is no place for the water to hook up and there is no place for the water to come out . I deal with old sprinklers .

Looks like a planter wheel to me. It would be part of a system to plant seeds behind a tractor. It looks like it would make a furrow for the seeds to drop into. Just my best guess I guess.
Not a planter wheel as the holes are not positioned properly for any seed to enter and no place for the seeds to be . I have worked with all types of planters .
The red flat part would be for stepping down on to get it into the ground and then push on the handle to cut the sod sections .. I'm just so dam smart it hurts !!

So here is another angle: The what-ya-ma-callit on the side seems to be angled & have a hole for a set-screw. Now let's imagine this with a wooden handle like a hoe. That opens up new possibilities. I've done my part, so U guys do your part & tell what it does so I don't have to explain the rest & make U feel like idiots.
I didn't buy a ticket so I might get kicked off. I say it's a sidewalk/ curb edger.

It's made for a wooden handle! Why would u need a handle to draw circles?
It's a blud-clot trimmer.

A couple of observations;
The rectangular slot appears to be for inserting a wedge, to remove this from it's tapered mount.
The second thing is the shaft that the wheel/turntable pivots on. If it was intended to turn continuously it should have a bearing/ bushing or a grease fitting. It wouldn't last long in a dirty environment.
None of this however helps explain what it is.
Try fitting a hose into the round opening....humor me!
it's a Victorian era deviled egg carrier - you attach to to a long metal bar to avoid smelling that sulphuric cooked egg scent. enjoy!

I think I may have solved this. I think it is used to roll along the sidewalks or curb edge to remove Grass buildup before Weedeaters came along. My reasoning is the fact that this has Scratches on the side that would have rolled along the concrete side. Well, What do you think???
I think the holes were to simply decrease the weight.

I just checked out the site and the trimmer was home made. This one I believe is a pro made one, especialy with the holes that were made in it. Just my Opinion tho. I am Excusing myself now !!!!!! !!!!
See my post #23. Solved back then. When I saw the new pics that showed the "dish" to the wheel, I was certain. Hell, I've used 1 before!

Now remember ...the hole is not for a set screw , it's to put a screw in to tighten the wood handle that gets inserted . A wedge can not be inserted in the slot because the wood or steel handle will be in the way , that's why I call it the weep hole to get moisture out so that rot or rust does not set in .
The screw in the center is what would be removed in order to grease the rotating section so as to keep it moving .
Try fitting a hose into the round opening....humor me! AAAUUUUUGGGGHHHHHH !

You are assuming the wood or metal went all the way to the bottom of the tapered hole.
Where is the screw you refer to that you have to take out to grease it.
Also what stops the the shaft from coming out of the pivot, it has no snap ring, cotter pin or any other fastening device.
It is a gopher catcher . When they stick head out of hole it clubs them . Used on golf coarse ? My goodness it is so clear :-)
Mani you brought back a favorite memory of my dad when I was a Boy! My Dad would scrape off the dirt on a Gopher mound to uncover the hole and then would sit in his outside chair about 15 feet away with his 22 pistol and wait for the gopher to start throwing dirt out of the hole to cover it up. Then he would eradicate the Gopher with one Shot. There are not many gophers left at the old homeplace!! Thanks Mani !!

Glad it brought back memories musik. My dad played golf before he passed , but we still have gophers :-) Maybe I need to get one of these to catch ones in my yard :-)
