    Stillwater
    (217 items)

My mother had this for years, all she knew was that it was something good. I don't think I've ever seen anything similar to it before, its very unusual. Its got Japanese marks on the base, maybe early 20th century? Does this style look familiar to anyone?

Me too! It always stuck in my mind, I just thought it was a fantastic piece! Very unusual. I'm really hoping that someone will recognize it here

The top two marks at right are 'Nichi Hon' or Nippon.

Check out the ones on the left here:

Very nice. Given the Nippon mark, I suspect you have a Japanese take on Jugendstil ceramic design, particularly the works of Ernst Wahliss and RSK/Amphora. I really like the yellow stylized "wind" design.

Thank you Vertraio, I will be scouring that link you sent me when I get home

And thank you Cogito, thats very weird, a Japanese take on Jugenstil? How bizarre! I'll look up those two names you suggested when I get home. Isn't it weird? I haven't seen anything like it before

I've been through it already a couple of times so far without success. The last character on the left side is "Zu" = made. The two above it are probably the maker. But I think you might need someone Japanese to transcribe them for you. I agree with cogito's comment about the wind marks and the stem handles leading onto the flowers are really nice.

Enjoy researching Ernst Wahliss and RSK/Amphora too!

I've been looking and looking and have had no saki as advised by gotheborg but am now convinced that the two marks abouve the Zu are Ku & Tani.
      Nine valleys or Kutani.

I have to thank you for prompting this research. For the last twenty years I've been wondering about the marks on a miniature vase of mine. I'd always thought it was Chinese but had an epiphany ten minutes ago. Having looked at the Kutani marks for the last bit I went to get some lunched and it clicked that these same three marks were those on my little vase. I went and checked ..... Alleluia .... Karma! I'm as happy as Larry Foley!

I Googled Kutani, I found one that had the exact same stylized wind and the flower motif, thats the first time I've ever been able to find one comparable! All the rest are quite different though, theres only that one, and the mark was a lot different. I'll have to do a little more digging on Google. Thank you very much Vertraio, I'm glad I could help prod you into identifying your own vase!

According to gotheborg the marks are many and various. In this case the ku and the first part of tani have merged and the rest is placed a bit below. Google " colours of kutani" and you'll see about the five six colours used too. I think the filling up of the entire surface with colour has a name too: Ao-de.
