Gnome of OZ 1927 by Ruth Plumly - I would like to know how to tell a first edition. 1927 is the only date in the book title page - The Gnome King of OZ by Ruth Plumly Thompson founded on and continuing the famous Oz stories by Frank Baum 'Royal Historian of Oz. Illustrated by John R. Neill
This book was originally published with 12 color illustrations tipped into the book in various places. The fact that your copy was published without the color plates means that it was published after 1935. I do not have my reference book near me at this time, but as I remember any copies with color plates are considered to be First editions. The book probably went through several printings with color plates, but since no differences are found between these printings they (all color plate copies) are all considered to be First edition books. Only the presence of the dust jacket might help to give a better determination.
