Here is a vintage 1945 Allyn Ashtray that I overhauled for display. Those of us who collect these are, ironically, mostly non-smokers who just think these classic chrome models are neat to display. The original poorly scaled metal prop blades have been replaced. I designed a proprietary method so that the propeller assembly is actually scale and the blades can be replaced. The canopy is carved, polished and detailed using actual WWII canopy plexiglas and it fits like a jewel in a P-51 setting. Send me a note if you have any questions.

There were a number of companies producing "airplane ashtrays". These include Allyn Sales, Pastushin, Riffe and others who produced these metal/chrome ashtrays. Full-scale aircraft manufacturers contracted these companies to produce these as gifts or rewards to employees, suppliers and certainly the military brass. Many ended their days floundering in little FBO's and bars. Allyn made a whole series of airplane ashtrays which are very collectable. In most cases, finding the uniquely designed black glass insert is the most difficult part. It had a special lipped edge to nest into the base. Google search Allyn Sales and Pastushin for more types. Thanks for your comments.

Wonderful looking item. Great restoration! Do you have others? Do you sell them?
    3. ohmyflyguy, 12 years ago
Yes, I do a few overhauls for others. In fact, I am overhauling a gentleman's 5 model collection currently. When I do sell one of these, it is usually on Ebay under my moniker 'ohmyflyguy'. It will not be until September that another comes available. I will post some of the other models that I have previously overhauled.
As a note of definition (and semantics)- Restoration puts it back to original, stock condition. For Allyn P-51's, the original prop and canopy were incorrect in scale design. OVERHAUL means that those design flaws are corrected. Collectors stand on two sides of this fence and I tend to lean towards making the object more attractive. With the aviation collectors I know, it seems, if it does not appear to look right then its wrong. Regards,

So, by definition, at 62 I guess I am considered an OVERHAUL rather than a RESTORATION! LOL
I will keep an eye out for you on Ebay.
Thank you for the response and clarification.

Was that a top-O/H or major-O/H with 0 time engine now?

The Packard Merlin has had a 0 time overhaul as well :{)

You know, they actually used those Allison engs. on PT-Boats. Lucky for restorers even if they do have to goEXPERIMENTAL after using those parts.

Don't know what was happening there. Got no response when I hit "submit" on the 1st. Live & learn.

Saw one of these on a table in an Alec Baldwin movie on Netflix, 'Thick as Thieves', and thought it looked cool and a search brought me here. I'll have to keep an eye out for one...

Great item. I want one. I went to a Fighter Bird Meet in North Weald, Essex many years ago and I'd travelled along the M11 motorway and was giving up on finding the World War 2 aerodrome and in my car mirror. I saw a Plane getting closer to me anyhow as it passed over with almighty roar. I saw it was a P51 all silver and it banked right and flew toward the air show! Fantastic free moment!
