trunkman

This is my newest addition to my collection. Dating from the turn of the 1800's this soft top leather trunk is in great shape for its age. There is a hole in the lid to stuff your linen or laundry in to make the seat soft. If you where waiting for a stagecoach, train or steam ship, why not have a seat? Apparently they are quite rare. The leather top has a wonderful tooled motif, and a nice scroll to the brass tacks. Two leather straps that went across the top are missing. Other than that it is all original, down to the leather stays to hold the lid open. I was very excited to see this come up for sale and had to wait a week to acquire it -- seems no one else was interested!
I've never seen a trunk like this one! I also loved your account of stuffing dirty laundry beneath the canopy to get a 'soft seat'.
A real treasure.
Thanks walksoftly, mikkoChristmas11, Bell, eye4, for the comments -- it is always great hearing from you all.
Thanks Manikin, ho2cultcha and mmajestic1 for the L's.
I was fixin to say, "I KNOW THIS WAS'NT BESIDE THE ROAD!?"
Thanks PhilDavidAM -- that is part of the joy of collecting, as you well know, to be cognizant of intrinsic value of special pieces. Getting em dirt cheap also helps...
Thanks blunderbuss2 and officialfuel and Manikin for the L's.
Nice trunk!
Well what a surprise -- thank you very much!
Thank you eccentric1 for the love,,,
Thanks for the love Lundy!!!
I picked up a similar trunk at a recent auction. I collect antiques but know nothing about luggage. Mine doesn't have the studs but does have lots of engraving and the interior trap door to the lid is intact. It has a label that says Archibald & Foster Saddlers....gurneys & trunks. Do you know anything of it's history or where I could get more info. I am also curious to know how much it might sell for. Thanks
Love it!!! I could tell by the design it must of been really beautiful when it was new.
Thank you Kathycat and Acadiandrifter for the comments. I do not know about the maker Archibald & Foster Saddlers, only to say that it makes sense that a saddle maker would make this type of trunk. Hard for me to comment on value having not seen your trunk to verify its age or type -- make a post for us all to see! Usually these types of trunks are in the $600.00 range, if you can even find one. Hope this helps a little.
Thanks....I'll take some pics and post them.
I have posted some pics of my trunk....I have a few more if you are interested. Looking forward to hearing what you think it is!!
Thank you blunderbuss2 for the L...
