A great acquisition from a recent auction! This Lehigh Valley dining car platter was produced by Onondaga Pottery Company (Syracuse China) by most likely no later than 1926.
It is about 27.5cm at its widest point, and about 18.6cm at its narrowest. Except for a few manufacturing errors, which are minor, this plate is in excellent condition.
One does not often see LVRR dining car items, and even less often is something in this pattern found.
stahlguy...you're comment did not show up, but I received a notice for it in ,my regular email. Please contact me with your email, and I'll get back to you..thanks!
WoW! LV RR Easton pattern. Your right it doesn't get much better than that. Great piece!
Yes, railsnail, I feel truly blessed to have obtained this item...it is a real beauty, and a great enhancement to my collection!
At one time LV china was one of the most coveted dining car collectable. I had a number of silver hollowware and some flatware items from the Lehigh Valley, but only had a few pieces of china and they were all the ASA Packer pattern which is not as rare as the Easton. Nice find.
Thank you, railnsail, for your kind and informative comments. From your input, it seems that this item might have some value to it. Since you knowledgeable on this topic, if possible, could you please give me an estimate of its worth? Thanks!
Hi:
Please contact me at kcasteel@columbus.rr.com regarding your lehigh valley platter.
In today's market it's hard to but a value on an item such as this one. It is rare, but the Railroadiana market is soft right now. If you are going to sell it I would avoid offers, and put it up on Ebay and let a broad audience determine value. If I were selling it I would not take a dime less than five hundred bucks, and realistically it should bring closer to a grand or better. But again the economy is bad and the collectable market reflects that. If it were mine, I would hold on too it.
sounds like stahlguy keeps getting deleted for trying to buy this?
Railnsail is right -- do not give in to people looking to give you "lots" of money for this - this pattern is very rare. eBay is the best bet. The market is "soft" but NOT for higher end pieces, which this is. "Official Guide to RR Dining Car China" (McIntyre) rates this pattern 4+ out of possible 5; "Dining on Rails" (Luckin, more conservative) gives 4 out of possible 5. Put it on eBay with a reserve $100 more than the best offer you got from here !!!
Personally, I would not sell it. But if you do the last one I saw on Ebay about five years ago went for over a grand from what I remember.
Yikes, these numbers are staggering!
Please don't be staggered, just take a breath and enjoy owning something highly sought after. Of course you have no clue about a hobby you aren't into.
You own a very rare piece of RR china in amazing condition (they are usually beaten up from use), highly sought after by collectors in that particular field. You can be certain that people trying to buy it from you through this forum are looking to profit from your not being informed about this particular hobby interest. I would agree your platter is likely would bring 4 figures on eBay. The market is soft but "higher end" pieces like this are holding value well. This is a very rare pattern, from a railroad line that is very hard to find any pieces from at all, and the piece itself is in beautiful condition.
Again, my suggestion is that if you want to sell it, take the HIGHEST amount you have been offered, add AT LEAST $100 and use that total as your "reserve" price on eBay, and see what happens. Using eBay will let you reach END COLLECTORS (wanting it for themselves and willing to pay higher prices than resellers), not just "RESELLERS" (who have to buy low to make a profit reselling). My only suggestion would be to wait until after Labor Day, eBay is traditionally slow in August.
Another choice is a highly respected auction called Railroad Memories - see http://www.rrmemories.com - well known, well run for years. They should jump at the chance to auction your platter.
I cannot find any of this pattern in any price lists but I have a price list from a railroadiana reseller from 2005 offering a Lehigh Valley "Black Diamond" (another extremely rare pattern) platter, 8x5-1/2, price is $1,500.
Good luck - !!
Thank you, timeandagain, your input is valued. I'll hold this plate for a short, then will most likely sell it. Watch for activity on this piece....
