the insulator is there for size comparison. it's a very good size to hold a small plant. i have an oregon grape [Berberis / Mahonia nervosa] growing in it now. i picked it up at a used furniture store in san francisco a few months ago.
Boy you sure buy a lot of these planters. You must have lots of plants?
I didn't know that any of these could be collectible or old? I live in the Southwest, I've been to Mexico and they have these outdoor shops with like an ACRE of things like this, so I've never taken a second look at any of them
Can these things really be old and valuable?
well this one is a very solid and large piece - really excellent quality for planting a small to medium plant in. it's almost heavy enough to be in a public place w/out walking away. it was made sometime in the 60s or 70s - i think. it's what they call architectural pottery and it does go for relatively lots of $. some of them are valuable and others aren't. mexican pottery has been historically much cheaper, but it seems to be turning around now and is going way up in price - thanks to ebay. some mexican pottery is made from softer, lower-fired clay and those are inferior in my opinion, but some of it is fairly decent quality. this stoneware pot is extremely hard and durable - reminds me of sewer tile.
Yeah, I always just assumed that they all came from Mexico or Home Depot. I think I'll start taking a closer look at them though. Must be a fortune to ship one of those things, can't put them on eBay I guess...
there are some beautiful ones from mexico. but you won't find any of them at home despot.
i figured out yesterday that this pot and a couple of nice, large blue ones i have are all made by Garden City Pottery - from 30s-50s. yay! mystery solved and time to research some more.
this looks like one that was designed to sit in a stand. I have a few of the stands that pots of a similar shape were designed for.

This pot is much too heavy for a metal stand like that. It weighs around 25 lbs. it was designed to be a floor planter like a piece of the architecture hence the name architectural pottery. I like your potstand!
Looks like a Bauer Biltmore pot...?
