I found this beautiful portrait at a flea market. I thought that it was a water color portrait, but the proprietor showed me that it was originally a photo that had been hand tinted. The photo had since faded quite away, leaving only the faintest traces. The image that resulted looks very much like a water color portrait. The back of the photo shows graphics that indicate that it was printed on special paper. It doesn't look like the stock a painter would use for his work.
I posted this today for use in my comments on lisahugheslong's beautiful horse 'painting'. Please have a look at her painting, "Beautiful Horse Painting - Hemment". It is marvelous. Both Bellin and I want it bad, but we are very happy that Lisa has it!

Looks like a famous outlaw I have seen before in a Time life Book, but I can't pull up a name right away! Does he look familiar to anyone else out there? If I come up with a name I will let you know.
What you have is a PHOTOGRAPHIC image that was then hand colored. You can see the photographers (or painters) notations about the colors for the subject.
Many were copy images of smaller photographs that were enlarged and put into frames.
This type of image was typical of the 1860s- 1890s.
Your image appears to be an albumen print and based on the format and clothing, I would date it to the late 1860s- 1870s.

Musikchoo, he has reminded someone else of an outlaw - Jesse James. To me, he doesn't look like James, but what do I know about outlaws? If you think of whom it reminds you, would love to hear of it! I might then place a sign on it: "This is not my ancestor."
Scott, I hope my description wasn't inaccurate – it was not very thorough or enlightened. I greatly appreciate your comments and your knowledge!! I had heard of albumin prints, but had never seen one identified, and hadn't a clue as to their distinctive characteristics. Wonderful that you can provide this dating range! I remember seeing many photos of Confederate officers with facial hair fashions of the most elaborate kind, and when I saw this, I thought it might have been produced close to that 'period'.

Glad to help out-- be careful of the "looks like" attributions.
Cold identification (without provenance or some markings) is usually impossible to prove and "looks like" rarely IS. Unless the SAME image exists with an ID written on it or family provenance, it will be tough.

I do believe that is Correct!! Jessie James. See if you can pull up a Photo of him around that time period. I am almost sure I have seen thay exact photo of him!!

It's just that I once bought a damaged painting very, very cheap because it was beautiful. I removed the frame. Wow! I saw the signature of Sir Joshua Reynolds, and I got all excited. Could I possibly have a Reynolds?!!! I was chagrined to discover that it was a copy of a WELL KNOWN Reynolds painting. So, I am now cautious of likenesses! I am not laughing at you at all - this unknown man does look like Jesse James. I am smiling at myself. Thanks again for your SUPER CONTRIBUTION! I always pay attention to what you say, sir. Bellin, I sold my vintage Hermes scarf, but it's possible I still have photos somewhere. I'll check. The Hermes scarf is 'the bestest'! I did, however, post my Battle of Yser medal today in place of the Hermes. I had to scan it since I'm such a poor photographer, so it doesn't appear nearly as beautiful as it really is.
