M for Maryland Glass Corp. ?
Yes,
"Maryland Glass Corporation, Baltimore, MD (1907-c.1970s). Mark first used in 1921, according to trademark info reported in Peterson's 400 Trademarks on Glass (1968). This company specialized in cobalt blue glass bottles and jars. Many of the containers made for Phillips Milk of Magnesia, Bromo-Seltzer, Vicks, Noxema, etc, were produced here. Maryland also produced the most commonly seen type of "violin bottle" in various shades of blue (and probably other colors). Maryland Glass was acquired by the Dorsey Corporation in 1968, and I believe that the "M" mark was discontinued sometime in the early 1970s"
packrat-place Solved the mystery in my opinion, Thanks packrat-place Mad Props.....
Hey, packrat. Clear this up for me. Before the named brands got involved, wasn't cobalt blue to signify poisons & drugs like morphine?
Yes, green was also used for poisons. Cobalt was used alot for drugs and chemicals that you wanted to preserve the chemical quality, as it let very little sun light in to break down the chemicals.
Thanks packrat, I've never really known for sure. I have an old morphine cobalt blue bottle who an antique dealer's son who was into drugs was looking at 25 yrs ago and said, "Can you imagine how much it would be worth if it was full?". I didn't tell him that I had emptied it out the week before because I didn't know what the white powder was. It was full!
