Recently I started metal detecting as a hobby. This afternoon, I found these two, what appear to be old bullets, in the woods near my childhood home. They were found at the top of a very large sand pit, which was dug out in the early 1980's. Homes were supposed to be built there, but never were (so I understand). A little about the area and how I found them...
They were located in central New Jersey, in Middlesex county. The two items were located a few yards apart, and were quite deep in the ground. I would say 8-10 inches below the forest surface. The one darker in color, more like an in tact bullet was in clay type of sand, while the other was in black sand.
I am able to make out some markings. On the black bullet (first picture left hand side, it looks like 35C was engraved along the side. Also, on the bottom side is a large number 3 (picture 3 but it doesn't show so well). The second, completely smashed bullet is much more white and dusty in color. I can make out the number 0, and some letters "_ _ max a_m". Something like that. Both items came out of the ground CAKED in sand and dirt. Running them under warm water for 5 minutes would not even wash the dirt off. I used a soft toothbrush to finally see what they were.

Hey, thanks everyone for taking the time to help me identify these bullets. Recently I went back to the same area and found another piece (looks like another old bullet). I am going to post the picture later tonight. Thanks again!
Have fun! My brother has a great time finding those old bullets and sometimes arrow heads, buttons, and old coins. Almost none of them are of significant commercial value, but they can have historical significance anyway, and as long as you're enjoying yourself, it's great! I'll look for your new item tonight. I'm sure I won't be of any help with a bullet, but it sure is interesting to look at these old bullets. miKKo

I would guess the 35C to indicate the caliber of the round (eg. 35 Caliber).
