Good morning fellow collectors, I hope everyone is having a great morning ( It's Friday!! ). A good friend of mine at work found out that one of the items I liked to collect were ashtrays. He told me he had one he bought when he was in the Navy serving on the USS Nimitz during the 70's. I did not know what to expect so I was very pleased to say the least when he brought me this ashtray. It is awesome! It measures approximately 6" across the top and is made out of solid brass. It feels like it weighs about 3-5 pounds ! Needless to say, this has been added to my collection with pride ! I know that this is not really considered trench art, but I love the military connection, especially since I served in the Marines. Also very cool that it came from a friend. Thanks for looking and have a great, safe weekend. Thrifty Gypsy

Thrifty Gypsy: Thanks for posting the ashtray-my son was one of original crew aboard the USS NIMITZ-I am thinking he went aboard around 1975 but could be wrong-The Navy had what they called family times and of coarse the crew member familys were invited aboard to look over the ship-great experience-
We just went aboard her-they served lunch-we were in mess line and I asked the server what a item was -he told me it was creamed spinach-I ask him how it was -he told me he didn't know noone ever tried it.--They did have one day cruises for the familys but we never went out on one-My son and his buddy enlisted together and both served on the Nimitz-always made sure to include his buddy in our plans during our stay-we always stayed at the Holiday Inn at Virgina Beach.
Neat addition to your posting. Just as a "Matter of Fact" , I was on the :Madian" voyage of this ship, spent a week aboard , then was tranfered to another squadron and ended up on the CV-59. Thanks for stiring up some old memories.
LOL. just reread my comment. OOPS, can't spell. I will have to blame the "Corps" for that. Semper Fi Thrifty and have a great weekend.
Thanks AR8Jason, sayer34, and kerry10456 for the love and the great comments and stories. I just checked out the CW site and found the comments you guys had left. I really learned alot about the USS NIMITZ and I enjoyed reading the stories of my fellow collectors experiences with the ship. Thanks again for taking the time to share your stories. Thrifty
Semper Fi to you to kerry10456 and a good weekend to you also ! I'm glad it stirred up memories, hope they were all good ones. I did not get to spend much time working on my spelling either during my time with the Marines. Talk to you later. Thrifty
Hey AR8Jason, It was probabably your close "proximity" to Marines during your service in the Navy. After all we were just a branch of the Navy anyway ! Sort of like red headed step children ! ( I apologize for the comparison- do not wish to insult red headed step children ! ). Or as we were sometimes called, Uncle Sams Misguided Children. Either way, I always felt a kinship with my Navy brothers. Semper Fi to you Kevin, Hope you have a great weekend. Thrifty
Went digging through some of my "Military" things and found a Numb-nuts (Nimitz) zippo from when I was aboard. Will post same, when I get to town for new batteries
