The old coffee grinder is un-marked & when I got it a swivel cover for the top front that broke & gone. The level is marked "Rabone Chesterman", 3 inverted V's, "1626"(not a date) & "Made in England".
Quick look at ebay shows the level as virtually worthless, but I still use it when I can't reach my other one so it is worth something to me.
nice -- i love my coffee and i love the old coffee mills as i have so many from the midwest -- stick my nose into the china cabinet and just take a deep breath -- glad you liked our singer sewing machine cabinet -- have been doing some research on vaseline glass that is most interesting -- been on the internet today to learn what is what --
Last time I took it apart(20 yrs ago) it still worked & the pin could be removed for adjusting. If you are around SXM, I'll give it to you. I went thru open-heart 2 yrs ago & dumping stuff on people who would appreciate them rather than they later disappear into the shadows to people who don't care about them.
I'll keep the level as I still use it. Don't drink coffee.
Great piece
Thanks again Aimathena. Are you just drifting thru my old postes? The coffee grinder was sent to the States to sell with a friend & the U.S. Gestapo repacked it so poorly that the cast iron handle was broken & so it is now worthless.
Yes, I was. Sorry to hear that. It was such a lovely grinder.
Yeah, but s-it happens. Especially with gov't. employed people with no obvious training. I had had that for about 45 yrs.
Ouch! That had to hurt. Not just government ppl tho. Fed X & UPS have destroyed plenty of my shipments.
My fault for trusting when I know they can't trusted. I got greedy. Tried to send for selling. It was only worth a few $ & would be worth a lot to me just sitting on the ice-box.
Such a shame. I'm very sorry for the loss.
Where did it end up?
It's in CO . My friend would probably send it to you. You can weld cast iron, but you will never get a piece to look good again.
That wouldn't matter because it would be for looks not value.
I'll ck Bob & see about it & the "glass" are still there. If you just want to use the grinder for decoration, I would suggest "Liquid Weld". It is strong & unless somebody f--ks with it, it should be OK. Originally, I had the swivel front lid but long lost (pre-gestapo). Just good every-day grinder that has good appeal.
So your still alive.
Did I dash your hopes?! Sorry pop, but I'm still here! Just catching up with work & haven't had time to keep-up with CW. . I have only had time the past few days & certainly not going back 6-8 wks.. Lot of work @ the aerodrome & wondering if I'm helping, or part of the problem? Good to have friends.
I miss your mischief.
What could you possibly mean pops? You certainly know that I'm a perfect gentleman at all times! Glad I can't hear you laugh O/L.
Aimathena, Bob said he con "wire weld" it & send it to you. How about, I send you his address in CO, you send him a few $'s to cover the postage & he will mail it to you? Let me know.
Hey... I like this. Wish I had it... wait, I do ;^)
Amy, if you dressed that repair, you can get an excellent browning solution from:
Laurel Mountain Forge
P.O. Box 52
Crown Point, IN 46308
Ph 219-548-2950
For anybody who has picked up that iron/steel item that has been over cleaned or sanded & wants to get that orig. browned finish.
What's up trouble? :-P
oh and I have one just like this ;-)
I haven't ground my own coffee in years but I still have half a dozen or more old torpedo levels I still use. They aren't worth much but I like the old wooden ones. I have one new metal one that is magnetic I use to level appliances. In the old days they were called whiskey sticks. The vials had alcohol in them so they wouldn't freeze up in the winter. It applied more to a masons four foot level but the term kind of stuck with levels in general, like the spirit level. Polite folks called it spirit level and working men called it whiskey stick.
Never heard them called "whiskey sticks" so guess that tells us which crowd each of us hung around. LOL Actually, I've never heard them called "torpedo levels" either & this is the only 1 I've ever had & then only about 5 yrs. Given to me by an Aussie friend whom I appropriately tagged "Outback Andy".
Modern torpedo levels have the ends squared off but if you look up vintage or antique torpedo level you will find it. Same goes with the term whiskey stick. I guess you need to age a bit more.
I'm already old enough to have known a slave from the War of Northern Aggression era/error, flr! Can you match that? Well, at least we know there won't be a 13 on our markers unless it's the day. LOL
