I grew up w/ this kind of pottery - lots of it. my parents had good friends in denmark and sweden in the 70s. they collected lots of this kind of pottery back then. i thought this piece was particularly nice, but i can't read the signatures on the bottom. not that reading them would mean much, because i don't know anything about this kind of pottery [beyond what i like]. can anyone else read it or tell me anything about it?

i just replaced the last image w/ one which shows the backwards E floating by itself. i don't see any other marks beyond the ones you see here. the bowl is LARGE - 14.5" across.

      Søholm Stentøj

Søholm Stentøj (pronounced 'Soorholm staintooy' - Søholm stoneware). In Denmark the 'ø' character (o slash) is equivalent to the 'ö' character (o umlaut) in Germany, Sweden and Norway. In very old Søholm pieces (around 1835 to 1878) the name will be marked Söholm. The company was founded in 1835 at Rønne, the principal town of Bornholm, a Danish island off the south coast of Sweden, and the name should not be confused with the town in Frederiksborg some twenty miles north of Copenhagen.

The Wolffsen family ran the pottery from 1878 into the first decade of the twentieth century and pieces from that period are often marked with the names H Wolffsen or Chr. L Wolffsen. From around 1910 to 1930 management was in the hands of Carl Møller. The use of earthenware was introduced after 1930 as an alternative to stoneware.

Noomi Backhausen was a designer for Søholm from 1966 to 1990 and set up her own pottery in Rønne in 1996.

Thank you ozmarty! what great information! the bowl is really beautiful and i figured it was special. there is another mark on it which doesn't show up in my photos here. it is an incised [letterpunch] 'E'. do you think this means that it was created by Einar Johansen between 1958 and 1966? let me know if i should post another pic w/ the 'E' showing. thanks again for being so generous w/ your time.
