This is an Australian Aboriginal spear and shield I acquired while working for Mt. Newman Mining and living in the town of Newman, in the Pilbara region of W. Australia.
Made from a Native Australian hardwood tree, I did know which but have forgotten, sorry!
The shield is a fine, late example of a Southern Desert shield with an unusual fluted face design pattern, typical of early work from Yalata in SA. Yalata is an Aboriginal community in S. Australia. So they were far from home!!
The 'short' spear is possibly a transitional trade example C1970.
The Boyd plate (which I have in an earlier posting) is showing Aborigines out hunting with their different spears and boomerang, which was also used for hunting!
(((FYI.. Newman is located about 1,186 kilometres (737 mi) north of Perth and 9 kilometres (5.6 mi) north of the Tropic of Capricorn, so a very hot place to live in the summer and cold in the winter)))

The Boyd plaque is wonderful, the pink rocks are so Namatjira! I have been waiting for the moment to put up some of my artifacts too. The moment has arrived. I love both the shield and the spear. Thanks inky for introducing these to a wider public!
