This horse is slightly over 2 feet tall. it is wood and carved in many different pieces. It looks to have some age and has glass eyes. The tail and mane are long missing. Is this considered folk art? the pose is assymetrical - even the ears are each in a different position. I think this was hand carved, but what would the purpose have been? it is the correct height for a riding toy but I see no signs of anything attached to the hooves and the legs are too delicate to be sat on. it looks like there might have been a bit in the mouth. Someone suggested it was a display for tack? Thanks for any info!
How fun to speculate! I would also guess it was used for advertising or display purposes. It's so beautiful and realistic, what a treasure! I love it!
Thank you both for your kind compliments! I got him at a retired antique dealer's storage clean out sale. His 2 front feet were off above the hoof (joints or old repairs) and the woman only had one hoof. I waited for 6 months and she actually did find the missing hoof and actually did call me - both incidents surprised me. I've replaced one missing eye and made a "toupe" mane and replacement tail, but I photographed him au naturel. I see traces of paint, he might have been partially white at one point?
What a magnificent piece ! Wow I love him or her . Then to find the missing hoof and her to call you was a miracle . What a treasure !
