I found this really unique(i think) item. it has no markings on it what so ever. The ball like thing on the metal stick is some sort of porous stone. Does anyone know what this is? Please help me solve this mystery!

Well there is a vintage honey pot on e-bay that looks a little like it . At least it has what looks like a stone ball on the end of stick like this item . Oh well .

We used to have one quite similar when I was a kid that was used as a fire starter. The tankard was kept filled with kerosene or coal oil and the pumice-like stone would soak in it. Then you stuck it under your kindling and lit it. Once the kindling began to burn, you removed the stone. Once cooled, it was replace in the tankard. So my bet is on fire starter. :-)
