Sometimes it can be expensive belonging to an exclusive club. I find this to be the case with my membership in the 8-Pack. No dues, but keeping up with these hot shots and being subjected to their great display ideas ain't cheap! When I bought the Vendo, Mr. Tommy commented "OH BOY, I see an empties rack in your future". Well, the thought never crossed my mind... until it did his! I ran across this generic rack with 3 sectioned six-pack crates, eBay BIN delivered $85, and felt it was the perfect low cost piece for next to the Vendo. Seller said her father brought it home from the factory in Ohio where he worked for many years, after it closed, and it had been there as long as he could remember (who knows how much of that is true, but sure sounds good). After I set it up tonight, I remembered a display rack sign I bought some time ago and put in storage after not finding a good spot for it. So added it atop my empties rack to create a right fine Frankenstein piece. (IT'S ALIVE! :) Seems to work. (Thanks again Tom for the great tip, another winner!)
Thanks Michael for stopping by. Hope you have a nice weekend.
The guy who sold me the Vendo said he'd kept that key in a safe for 30 years. Yes, I'm definitely pushing the limits of "artistic license" with this piece! Love it!!!! Thanks Mr. TGBWC!
You don't miss a thing! Like I said, being in the 8-Pack is a financial hardship. At least I didn't put cans in there!!!!
" Artistic license" I like that.... It's only Frankenstein until the right parts come in. I could send you my "older" bottles to get you out of hot water with the purists, but they are still ACL bottles so you would still be on the stove!!! Looks great Dave.
Thanks for the offer Tommy. I'll keep my eyes peeled for period bottles, maybe start going to flea markets and auctions one of these days (when I have time). In the meantime, I have an idea about using the empty crates to display other items until I can fill with "the real thing". At this rate, someday I may look out the window of my home, only to see Ray and his posse of purists coming up the street holding pitchforks and torches! Fire Bad!!!!
Thanks fifties, always a pleasure.
I love it Dave! Coke is it!
Always nice to hear from one of the 8-Pack, thanks Perry!
Looks awesome together Dave, like Laurel & Hardy, Abbott and Costello,Starsky and Hutch, wait I could go on and....
Sorry Dave, just tryin' to say your basement looks amazing!
Thanks Bernie!
I have a hand truck with that sign, but looks real cool on an empties rack! nice piece!!
Thanks 42. I like it there just fine too. If you look real close at that sign, the 7 in $1.79 is a painted over 6. So back in the 60's when it was in use, the store jacked up price by a dime and somebody did a decent job of whiting out the 6 and painting it over with the 7. A case of 8.5 oz Coca-Cola in glass bottles costs me about $20 today. And I have to put them in my car all by myself! :)
Updating this post to show the period bottles and sign added since I first purchased the return rack last year. Bottles in bulk from the 50's are not easy to find on eBay for a good price. I've found if I can have them delivered for $2 or less per bottle, I'm doing well (I have a feeling the flea market prowlers might cringe at that cost... not sure). I recently found an eBay seller who was peddling dozens so I bought 6. Dozen. Also I found a listing for an old Coca-Cola paper sign with a picture of the rack. So I was happy to validate original form and it's connection to Coca-Cola. My next mission is to replace the six pack crates with single bottle crates, then that should do it for this display element.
Have a good weekend everybody.
