yesteryear…

My friend remembers receiving her Charlie McCarthy ventriloquist doll - complete with a dapper wardrobe in a traveling trunk - when she was just 8 years old. He's still looking great - because over a lifetime which included marriage and three children, he's been carefully stored in only a handful of places, and brought out for only the most special occasions.
Alas, his composition head, shoulders, hands, and feet have crazed some over the years. His mouth no longer moves as it should by the string hanging from the back of his neck. The booklet he came with has been eaten here and there by channeling insects, though you can still read the Edgar Bergen comedy routine inside.
But he retains that impish sophistication Edgar Bergen approved when Effanbee made him back in 1937. Composition still shining, clothing in natural fibers still intact, trunk still solidly providing a protective home. You can almost hear him greeting you with an "It's about time you came by - I'm dynamite I tell ya!"
