These photographs were given to me in their original album, which was fairly damaged (and smells funny). They were taken in various photography studios around Boston between the 1840s and 1860s or '70s. None are dated. I haven't been able to find much information about them, but the studio names are embossed on the cardstock on which the photos are mounted. Some of the studios are Cook, E.E. Reed, J.K. Patch, F. Schadee, Holloway, Towne Portrait Studio, and E.L. Jaynes. Many have very nice designs as well. I know very little about photography, so I'd welcome any information about the type of photo these are.
The dogs' names are, left to right, Nico and Dandy.
I have no idea who any of these people are; apparently they are the ancestors of my boyfriend's mother's great-aunt's husband...or something. It's clearly a family, as many of the people recur, sometimes in varying ages.
PS Sorry about the flash use, but it was the only way I'd get them in focus.
Nice photo grouping.
They are called cabinet cards and are a little later. I would date them all from the 1880s- 1890s.
Two are really desirable:
- Pair of dogs standing on their hind legs
- Civil War Veteran (2nd photo, top row, second from the left) wearing his Grand Army of the Republic Badge and what looks like a 3rd Corp (most likely) or 25th Corps Badge (Diamond). In the bottom row (far left) is another image of him, but without his badges.
