Another lawn ornament.
Dragged this out of the bush where it has been laying for decades, it was put there when the crank shaft broke.
It's what known as a hit & miss engine.
I have not been able to determine the maker of this engine as there are no markings on it.
Most engines of this type had a horizontal positioned cylinder, very few were made in the vertical orientation.
Could date from the late 1800's to the early 1900's

Look under Lister diesel generators & you will find your "hit & miss" eng.. We existed at my club in Jamaica for several yrs. with one before we got regular power put in. That was in the 70's. We kept it serviced even after that is the local power went out about as many times as the sun set.
@ blunderbuss I looked at a lot of pics of Lister engines & didn't see one like this.
This is a gas engine.
When I Googled up "lister diesel generators", "bing.com/images" shows 1 virtually identical except it has a larger base. First pic.. Well, I was wrong once in my life! If I weren't so modest, I'd be perfect.
blunderbuss you must be looking at different pictures than me or you need a new monitor or glasses... lol
You really had my hopes up when you offered that clue today, do you have another one ;-)
Couldn't find anything under Worthington either.

This is a vertical engine. Check out this site, try to match it up. I'm in to the old Maytags http://www.stationaryengine.org/strumpshaw_2004.htm There's an email link on their home page if you want to ask them.

@ gotwire, I just found out yesterday that this is a Kneeland engine, made by the Kneeland Mfg. Co.

@gotwire it is fairly rare in a few aspects or so I'm told.
One: it's a vertical.
Two: it has a blind cylinder, the head & cylinder are one unit.
Three: It has an open crankcase:
Four: Not many were produced.

here's a tip! You would need to coat bearing surfaces/machined surfaces with wheel bearing grease while in "the soup"

I'm going to need a big tupperware container Gargo & I'll have to wait till spring when the water doesn't freeze. I would have a hell of a time trying to rinse it off today, mind you I would have to get it out of the snowbank first.

Leave it where it is for now. I spent all afternoon trying to sweep the sunshine off our sidewalk and didn't make any progress. Some things just have to wait. That sunshine sure burns your bare feet when you go out to get the mail.
