1959 'Pearl Wardrobe': earrings signed Sarah Cov with copyright symbol on one side, patent 1967965 and scrollwork on the clip. The glass pearl necklace, also signed Sarah Cov, has a similar reversible clasp and removable strand. These are book pieces in 'Sarah Coventry Jewelry' by Kay Oshel.
This 1934 clip was patented by BA Ballou & Co. of Rhode Island and has been utilised by higher end designers such as Whiting and Davis, B David and Hobe. The patent says "the invention relates to a clip of the type to be used for engaging the ear or as a dress clip for articles of clothing; and has for one of its objects the provision of a clip which will when used on the ear be more comfortable and yet will not slip and fall from the ear". I have used these as dress clips and they pinch less than many earrings. BA Ballou have been a family firm since 1868!
The graduated glass pearl necklace I have had since my teens and may therefore have been given to me by one of my grandmothers, so it is one of my few UK pieces. The findings look old so could be anything from forties onwards, information welcome!
