hi... got this the other day...it was in a 'grab bag' and i didn't see that it had corrosion on the bottom until after i got it home :( i searched the internet for awhile and finally figured out what it is :) it is a brass asian tea caddy...as far as dating it, well i have to work on that...does anyone know if it's worth it to get it fixed? i was very disappointed to see the corrosion on the bottom...it is missing a 'foot' nubby . there is minimal corrosion and i am wondering if i should try and fix it....it is very lovely...there a 4 different scenes on the body and as you can see... i think it has bats and an asian character on the lid? lol...if you know anything about this very interesting piece please leave me a message....love this site!
    update:
hi, after reading some of the comments i decided to try and take a better pic of my brass tea caddy...it has 4 different scenes and some chinese character writing altho i don't have a clue what it says...i haven't decided what i gonna do with this one yet...it is still missing a 'nub' or 'foot' and i have not seen another one like it yet so for now it remains with only 3 nubs...thanks for looking and i will update when i know more about my brass tea caddy...love this site! p.s. i tried the nail polish remover test and the paint or enamel did not come off.

      I disagree on this one.

The "enameling" looks like a poor paint job. If you blow up the image of the top (photo #2), you will see that the enamel has no depth to it and runs over the center design.

Photo #1 shows the same indications on the fence railings-- many areas show the paint on top of the rails and numerous areas where it was not painted.

Enamel would have been fired and then melted to fill the void areas-- it wouldn't have "jumped" to the high areas. Only a brush could leave that type of finish.

Additionally, the quality of the metal is very poor.

Everything (including the "China" mark), speaks to a fairly recent piece that was "aged" to make it look old.
