For my 300th item I thought I'd switch to something different from Down Under. It is a pen and wash drawing of a Native American. It was bought a few years back at the Saturday market in Rozelle, Sydney. I have not been able to track down the signature. I'm hoping that someone on CW will help me with this.

I hope I've used the right terminology here: Native American?
I'm also after advice as to whether this is an image of a First Nations man, a Canadian Aboriginal man or an indigenous person of the Americas.

It has been drawn freely with a pen. It looks as if the outline is a continuous stroke moving from one point around the sheet of quality textured paper. The brown wash has been highlighted with some white stokes of the brush and there are faint hints of green (?).

Any hints as to the identity of the subject or the artist would be appreciated.

    Dimensions:
Wide 22.5 cm or 8.85 inches
Length: 30 cm or 11.8 inches.

vetraio50, when I first took a look at this piece I was thinking aboriginal, but really not sure. Concerning signature is it Weiland?

I believe this signature to be Wieland. It's been a usual thing for me to see things differently than others, so I'm used to that. In fact, I just saw a bowl? that looked like the shape of a Mickey Mouse head way before his time, what can I say?! Needless to say, I chose not to comment on that :)

Anyway, I really like this...To me the hair is frozen which I feel is verified by the mouth. I'm going to see if I can find out anything here.
    20. vetraio50 vetraio50, 10 years ago
      Hey, thanks for you input!
Now I can see Wieland too.

Hi there vetraio, I wonder if this drawing is handy and if you could take a closer photo of the signature for me. I took a pic of it with my camera to see if I could maybe make it larger or even more clear but it didn't really come out good and it's much easier for me if I have it in my hand as I'm searching. (I'll print it out for myself). I looked for hours last night and you wouldn't believe how many different names I came up with from just this one signature. Wieland is a true name, unlike Weiland. So far, no Wieland with this type of medium. In fact, that's more the reason it would help with a better photo of the sig. I'm leaning towards a couple other names I think it may be. If you look at it yourself and study the lines, which I'm sure you have done (it doesn't hurt to do it again after it's been a while anyway) but follow the lines and it seems to me some by his/her signature may just be part of the drawing.

Last but not least, I did come upon something saying that there was a student project with the Inuites (sp?) And at that time I was so tired, somehow I must have clicked everything off my computer in a snap! So I don;t even know where I was at this point lol!

Once again, I wish there was a law against the way the artists sign. Oh, and I did read that the way they sign is also a way for them to really rake in more $$$ being that people miss some of their work and one day it appears because they have changed the way they sign and it becomes a one of a kind!

I keep looking at the sig and the last letter may just be a P or Y...or YO frustrating but still love this drawing and now I really want to know! :) Thanks Vet

Ok, I just found out that Weiland & Wieland ARE both legitimate last names. Just wanted to make that note to clarify.

      G'day from a fellow Aussie,
That signature is definitely WEILAND, I am a genealogist and have read gazillions of old wills so I am used to deciphering weird handwriting.
Good luck in hunting down the artist and place of origin.

Hi Vet! I don't know what you might think about this, but I have to say, when I saw this I immediately thought of your drawing! Google this: The Tundra Book A Tale of Vukvukai

Tell me what you think :)

And I have to say, I scrolled thru your posts to find this one and you have so many amazing, high quality pieces of glass, pottery too. Very impressive :)

Thanks! Tundra peoples. I still think he is not that far north, but definitely an indigenous person of the Americas. I'm stubborn!

So I know a girl who is a friend of our family for years we get together over the year for party's for family and such, she is a Mi"Kmaq Indian as I call them ..from Canada her mom is one of the head tribal leaders of the whole east cost of Canada and northern Maine in the state's as far as I know ,..so I sent off some information and hoping for some help in return from her ..who knows,,,.if not you can contact them here.. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mi%EA%9E%8Ckmaq later

a little feed back from my post for information ...
      Michael Jones
With no disrespect for anyone, the image looks to be more Mongolian in nature then any branch of the Americas Indians. Would it not make more sense to be of the Asian breeding whereas it is a UK resident who has the interest. An honest assessment here rather then being my usual disagreeable self. :=))

I'll ask him if he means like,.. Genghis Khan...lol later
