Found this bayonet at an estate sale. Trying to find out more about it. What year? What country? Is it related to WWI or WWII?

Found this bayonet at an estate sale. Trying to find out more about it. What year? What country? Is it related to WWI or WWII?

Only markings on it is the EX2846 on the metal part of the handle.
Okay so after doing some research on bayonet websites it appears as though this might be a German WWII bayonet. But what model or gun it went to is something that I am still trying to determine. Please any assistance you awesome people might have would be much appreciated!

It looks like a WWII German bayonet, It would fit a K98k Mauser
Drie--, something just doesn't fit the WWII scene. The catch/release & nut r right but the shape of the end of the pommel isn't exactly right & guard. Maybe late war or WWI. My mind is slipping on WWI German bayonets, but it seems like there were usually 3 diagonal groves across the wood grips but still, end of war products often took short-cuts. Gut feeling is WWI.
Thanks for the comments! There was a website that seems to match a Mauser m/937 Short Rifle. I am going to try and take it to an apprasier and see if he might have any better answers. Thank you both again for your comments.

It looks like the German Model 1884/98 to me. That was the bayonet the Germans created in 1905 when they still had the 1871/84, 1888 and 1898 rifles in inventory and wanted one bayonet that would fit them all. They added the metal flash guard to the back of the grips in mid-WWI, and slot type screws to the hand guards right at the end of the war. The next bayonet to come along was the WWII era 98K bayonet.
HOWEVER - the 1884/98 bayonet was exported to many countries that used Mauser rifles, and some countries manufactured the same bayonet in their own countries. So - this may not be German used, or even German made. Based on the lack of markings, I'd say not.

Thanks for the comments. I noticed on one website about bayonets that this one also seemed to resemble a Portuguese bayonet from that time period that you mentioned but manufactured by Germany. So needless to say I am interested to see what the appraiser thinks about this item as well. I will be taking it to Ken Farmer who does fress aprrasials in my area on the 3rd Wednesday of each month. Ken has been on the Antique Road Show. I will also be sure to update this page with any information I can as I look forward to learning more about this bayonet and its history.

Mine appears to resemble the Bayonet SG 1884/98 without sawback. They describe on the website that: "1918 some further minor modifications were made like the addition of screw driver slots in the grip retaining screws and the saw-back had been removed. The S84/98 bayonet continued in production during the Weimar Republic era." Also the image they show of the bayonet doesn't appear to show any markings on it either so just another interesting piece for this mystery. Not sure if this is evidence that my bayonet is a German SG 1884/98 without sawback but what do you guys think?

Looks like the K98 on that same page is another possiblity.
Reference post #7: The Portuguese contracted with Germany to produce 1884/98 style bayonets for them in 1937 and 1939. These were designated the Portuguese model 1937 bayonet.
According to my references, these bayonets had their serial numbers marked on the pommel, as yours has.

Thank you for your comment. That was one of the other models I came across as well. If it is Portuguese I'd be excited too since that is where my parents came from!

So the appraisal guy felt that the bayonet was an Ersatz bayonet that was probably made towards the end of WWII. He did feel it was probably German made as well. However, this bayonet still seems to fit the styles of the WWI German Bayonets.

We knew it was German design & probably made all along.
With all due respect to the appraisal guy, I still think it's a German designed and manufactured export to Portugal. It's the serial number on the pommel that makes me so sure.
Chrisnp. That would simply add more awesomeness for me. Again I am of Portuguese decent and proud of my heritage. So finding a 1937 Portuguese bayonet made by Germany is awesome, especially since I had no clue when I found it at an estate sale for $10.
