I just bought this brass shell casing and projectile (no powder). The outside diameter of the tube is 2 inches at the base and narrows down to 40 millimeters (about 1 5/8"). The casing is 11 11/16" long and 16 1/4" overall with the projectile. the projectile is an aluminium alloy and has a very sharp tip.
Can anyone identify it from the marks?

I'd say Bofors 40mm anti-aircraft. The size jives, but that projectile is odd looking. Possibly it was machined later to give it a finished look for display. It's almost impossible, sometimes, to identify these by just the markings on the bottom of the canister. At least thats what I have found in researching mine.

I agree With fossilhunter on the projectile.
I made a lamp out of 1 & am typing under it now. My projectile I made from wood & the lamp stem comes up thru it. Wood base & I like it.
In the 50's or early 60's, I had a 57 m/m(?) dummy round with hollow projectile for training gun crews
