Emerald Green Coca-Cola bottle - 1961

This emerald green glass Coca Cola bottle was a mistake made by a new worker at the Chattanooga Glass Company when the Coca Cola mold was put on the emerald green glass furnace. Several bottles made it through before the error was noted and several bottles were then smashed into the remelt bin (except for this one and perhaps one other).

It is marked 6 ½ ounces – unlike several other hobble skirt bottles which have 6 oz markings.

It has the date stamp of 61 31 as best we can see. This would mean that it was made in 1961 with the mold numbered 31.

Coca Cola bottles were to be made with Georgia Green while this Emerald Green was used for bottles such as 7-UP. At the time the Chattanooga Glass Company had furnaces for Georgia green, emerald green, and clear Flint glass bottles.

Not only was the wrong mold put to the emerald furnace – but the amount of glass poured into the mold may not have been accurate to that mold which resulted in a difficult to read “date – mold number” on the side of the bottle.

The previous owner of the bottle kept it quite quiet as he knew the fellow who made the error could have lost his job over it.
