A few weeks ago, I found this book among my mother's books while clearing out our Pasadena house. I got curious and a few clicks later, I found that Julia Child had grown up in Pasadena, majored in English at Smith College in Massachusetts, and lived in Cambridge, MA for part of the 1950s-60s. My mother could well have bought the book used in MA where she grew up and attended college in Cambridge.

The signature looks similar to her book signatures in google images, though there appears to be an extra "s" or other mark. Any thoughts on this? Any other early signatures for comparison?

I really think you are on to something here. I read her biography last year, and from what I remember I would guess this dates to her time in Pasadena before WWII. Also the 8A is probably a notation for a High School class.
I would contact a Rare Book dealer in your area (West Coast), it would be worth the trouble.
      Good Luck!
