I was having a stoggie last night and thought I'd post these. I have had these in the shop for at least 15 or so years, and they get used all the time. Personally, I really don't see how cut down canisters can be concidered trench art, but it seems that is how they are refered to. The 5inch MK5 I cut down years ago because I needed the brass for a project. The 3inch AA I picked up as is at a flea market. The Anti-Aircraft canister facinates me because of all the restamps on the bottom. It has been redesignated for different weapon systems quite a few times. I have a few canisters projectiles etc in my collection, mostly because I am ex-artillery. On Time On Target! Hooah!
There are varying levels of artistry with trench art.
Some very basic-- with little or no ornamentation, and others highly engraved. Of course the degree of "artwork" and decoration determines desirablility and value.
Most trench art shells that were originally made ashtrays will have cigarette cut outs or rests applied to the shell base.
