I found this old knife cleaning out boxes in the basement and have been trying to research it. I know nothing about knives, but this has gotten my interest. So far I have been told 'oh, it's not that old', to this is 150 years old. It is stamped Bontgen & Sabin's PATENT and I "think" it is patent number 11072 from 1880. Can anyone help me out with what is correct and where to go from here?

Hello, I'm new here but I created this account just to help answer your question. I collect butterfly knives, which are properly referred to as "balisongs". Your balisong is considered quite a relic among collectors and not many turn up for sale. Chuck Gollnick, is pretty much one of the leading authorities on balisongs, and has a website (although he hasn't updated it since 2006-ish, all the information on there is accurate and comes from primary sources) and is currently a moderator of the balisong/butterfly knife section of bladeforums.com.
This page, http://www.balisongcollector.com/history.html , describes the history of balisongs, with some very explicit references to the Bontgen & Sabin's balisong itself.

Yes, thank you for your comment. I have been to Chuck Gollnick's website, but that is where it ends. I have found nothing else, maybe there is nothing else.
