The primitive art is what caught my eye with this piece. Appears to be hand made aside from the fastener which the piece was glued to. I removed it to look for identifiable marks, but have found none. The piece is made of two soft metals. The outter piece is gold colored which I believe is plated. The center piece appears natural colored and will mark on white paper as I have read is how to test pewter. Any information as to the orgin, age of the button cover, or what type of person would have used it and how would be most apperciated.

interesting - was it on a garment or loose? and in the middle photo does the piece on the right fit into the larger piece's center?
Hunter, yes it does fit into the other part. No it was not attached to any garment. This piece would snap over a button as a decorative cover.
This is a Button Cover that was made for the fashion industry in the 1980's-1990's.
This would slide over a plain plastic Button to give your garment a bit more pizzazz. Hard to say what the white metal is: but probably metalized plastic so that it's light.
I can see where the design caught your eye, it's interesting like a Button Rorschach test! lol
Fascinating object! I agree that the button cover mechanism looks like those made in the 1980s-90s, but the 'coin' unit and frame looks hand made to me. It looks 'hammered' and it's irregularly shaped. I don't think that plastic would mark the paper. This is really unusual!!! Thanks for posting it.
Metalized plastic Buttons are plastic in the center and have several thin coats of metal to give a metal look without the weight associated with a solid metal Button. Metalized plastic Buttons that do not have a varnish(stain) will mark paper.
Ah! Thank you very much, Buttonista! I used to wear button covers, but I never made a button to be inserted in such cover. I welcome this knowledge. : )
