A few weeks ago I posted another taller Minerva vase. At the beginning of the month I headed for the Collector's Fair on the dullest day of the year: Dad's Day aka Father's Day. Most of my regular vendors were at home being feted or perhaps they were feting their loved ones! After four hours of walking around the fair I finally gave up and headed home. In a final desperate effort to spend a penny or two I got off the bus and went into Vinnies. In Sydney the Vinnies thrift shops open on Sundays!
And voilà!
There it was, the other Minerva was on a high shelf awaiting me! It was slightly more expensive than the other one bought at another Vinnies ten kilometres away some months earlier!
I went home happy, ....... finally!
My matching Minerva had me mixing my metaphors!
The early bird catches the worm, sometimes and all good things come to those who wait. Self evident truths!
Minerva is less seen here in Australia, Avena seems to be more common. It was produced from 1976 until 1999. It has the TW signature to one edge of the square foot, but it has been really difficult to photograph. You really have to search it out.
I've put it together with the taller Minerva 2755.
There are some smaller dishes as well in this series.
Height: 17 cm or 6.7 inches
Width: 10 cm or 3.9 inches
The vase seems to pick up on background colour and transport it onto the 'ice/bark' surface.
I will add "meant to be" and "soul mates (vases)"
Three posts on my Flea experience are now up ; ))

Tapio Wirkkala was master of glass. Wirkkala's favorite theme with glass was ice and many variations of it. Ultima thule, Minerva, Pilkkiavanto(eng. Ice fishing hole) etc.

...this was 28€ and didn't sell.
I think this is great item but here in Finland people don't collect Wirkkala's clear glass items right now.
Many thanks RACER4FOUR 'n VINTAGEJOE too!
"Pilkkiavanto" are made only 10 pieces.
Thanks for that hint, VINTAGEJOE!
You never know your luck!
Urho Kekkonen's 70th birthday in 1970, Tapio Wirkkala invited him to Iittala glass factory. He got into the making of the small edition, too!
