I know nothing about this telephone other than it is marked Stromberg Carlson, can anyone tell me about this, maybe it's a phone test unit?

I have added another picture, no other markings but one part inside is marked West Test Set, Automatic Elec. Co.

Will you post some more pictures like wooden box closed. Is there anything marked other than Stromberg Carlson?

Anything marked on it that would indicate it might be US field telephone?

I believe that is is a portable telephone tester. If it has a crank on it it could have been used when the telephones were party lines. It would be able to make calls to test a persons phone lines when a phone line was down. Does it have a set if long leads.
It would have to be connected to the telephone line at the pole
SWBell used a similiar test that was very compact . It had a set of clips that could be clipped on the black leadings to any house and it had a rotating dial. It could monitor or check the line to the exchange. It could also monitor a conversation on a line using the mute switch. Those landline twin wire system are still used in the country. Now everyone has a smart phone.
