I found this fascinating vaseline plate at a thrift store. I have done some research and it appears that it was made in the 1885 to commemorate Ulysses S. Grant's death, made by Gillinder and Son's, the plate is 10 1/2 inches. I have viewed several different sites but do not know the worth, but it would appear that it is displayed in several museums (?). Would love to know more about it.

as to worth, it is whatever one is willing to pay at a given time; looking at completed sales on eBay they don't seem to move very well there and the highest current sale is at $26. From your images I'm not sure this is vaseline glass, as vaseline glass will glow very brightly under black light due to the uranium content; it may very well be vaseline glass but just can't say from these images. What color is the glass under normal daylight? Much of the glass from this era did also contain magnesium which will also glow faintly under black light.

      Hi TallCakes,

Thanks for the response, the second picture is the color with no uv light, the first and third pictures are with the light. To me it does look as though it definitely glows with the uv light shined on. I didn't know magnesium glowed also. It will be interesting to find out more info.

HI Rhonda, the image is too dark to tell the color in the middle photo. If the plate is canary yellow (i.e. the color of Vaseline) and glows very brightly under black light then it's Vaseline glass. Can be very hard to photograph tho'.

TallCakes, here is an additional picture with a white background and normal lighting. Hope this helps.
